YOUR UNIQUE PHOTOGRAPHIC PROCESS BY EXPLORING MINE
You've seen plenty of my photographs; now see the out-takes and the sketch images and explore the thinking and the choices that got me there, and in doing so, explore the possibilities for your own unique process of making—not just taking—photographs. It's Almost Here
The Photographer's Process is only open for enrollment once a year.
Leave me your name and email and I'll send an invitation when things are about to open again, to make sure you don't miss out.The Photographer's Process Video Series
The idea behind The Photographer's Process was to create a series of videos that would be like you and I sitting together in my studio and talking about the creative process that lead to some of my favourite images.
Photographers who are newer to the craft too often believe that they just aren't as talented as more experienced photographers, or that they are missing something. They see the best images and assume it was pure talent or dumb luck that led to the making of that photograph, when it's most often a process—a process you can learn. My images usually start rough, too. In some cases, really rough. I think there's tremendous freedom in seeing those rough images and knowing I didn't get the final image on the first try.
So, I want to show you not just the final image but all the sketches that got me there, as well as the thinking behind my other decisions: what was I thinking about when I put the camera to my eye? Which decisions was I making in composition? When I sat down to edit , why did I choose this frame? And why did I do what I did in post-production? You'll see the images that didn't make the cut, and the progression of the shoot from the first sketch images to the changes in point of view, exposure, optics and more—everything that led to the final frame.
The Photographer's Process was made for a program I created in 2018/2019 called Making The Image. It was a one-year program that won't be repeated, but I think these 14 videos (almost 5 hours of teaching) are too good to keep on my hard drives collecting virtual dust, so they're being offered now to alumni only for $44.00 (regular alumni price will be $91.00; $99 for non-alumni so this introductory pricing saves you $47).

"Outstanding. 6 out of 5 Stars."
"The Photographer’s Process was the standout part of Making the Image. The step-by-step walk-through of the ‘whys’ leading to a demonstration of the ‘hows’ completely changed my approach to image editing—from initial selection through post-processing. It was not just eye-opening, it was eyes gaping wide open. 5 Stars. "- Celeste Walz
"The Photographer's Process is an outstanding course. We get to see behind the scenes of how an image is made. The value is off the charts for a David duChemin course. 1 or 2 videos would be worth the price of the whole course. I would give this 6 out of 5 stars if it were possible." - Jon Vizzini
"I would wholeheartedly recommend The Photographer's Process to others. David’s openness and honesty about his thinking and workflow is more mentoring than just technique. 5 stars—all gold!”
- Lynne Murphy
"The Photographer's Process gets 5 stars! I have studied with David, online, for some years and have always found his teaching and inspiration worth my time, effort and money. His teaching is worth much more than it costs. His confidence, expertise, and approachability are remarkable in today’s marketplace. As a humanitarian photographer who is stuck at home due to COVID-19, let me tell you he will instruct, entertain and inspire you till you can get out and get back to full throttle." - Hank Henley
"Worth my time and money, no hesitation. A five-star buy. In this straightforward course on process, David generously invites us into his head, however untidy things might sometimes appear. As he works, we see decisions he both makes and discards, and why. I enjoyed being shown glimpses of the struggle to finish an image as it superbly emerges. I’m reassured that even the great are challenged behind the viewfinder.” - Kay Beausoleil
"David’s Making the Image course was one of, if not, the best photography courses I have ever had the privilege of taking. While I was sad to hear that it was to be discontinued, I was delighted when I heard that David was planning to offer one of the modules from that course—The Photographer’s Process—as an independent series. Imagine getting to sit down with one of the world’s top professional photographers and have him walk you through a wide range of his own photographs beginning with his approach in the field right through to everything he did in post-production that helped him fulfill his vision—not only what he did and how but, most importantly, why. That’s exactly what The Photographer’s Process is: an inside look at how a photograph is conceived and executed by one of the top photographer’s working today. Without hesitation, this offer is an absolute gem that really will change your whole approach to making photographs." - Kerry Gordon
"It is wonderful to see all those really gorgeous photos published out there, but it can also be quite intimidating, because we only see the result and not the stony path that led to them. It's encouraging to know that I’m not the only one who ends up with an outtake rate of 99 percent of my images! This series helped me understand the need for sketch images and tenacity, but also taught me to immerse myself into a scene, explore the possibilities, embrace obstacles, and to anticipate moments. The Photographer's Process showed me how to navigate my personal path to photographs that are perhaps not perfect but are uniquely mine." - Heike Lindner
"I loved seeing the process an accomplished photographer goes through, working his way around and through a subject to discover the desired photograph, to learning the edits that bring the photograph to its best expression—such eye-opening valuable lessons that have changed the way I approach my photography.” - Gail Kimmett
"The Photographer's Process was great - I loved seeing the progression from sketch images to a final image, and all the thought and work that went into making the final choices. Each video is a nice bite-sized chunk of inspiration. I highly recommend this series. 5 stars!” - Andy Wallace
